Eliza Mae

Artist Statement

Eliza Singleton’s conceptual ceramic work is inspired by the coastal landscape where she grew up. Form, texture and colour underpin her practice through experiments with special effect glazes. The sculptural and functional artworks are created from a combination of hand-building, throwing and slip-casting processes.

About:

Ceramics is the main medium that I use in my work, along with occasionally painting. I use stoneware clay for most of my pieces as I find it allows me to play with more subtle tone glazes and special effect glazes.

My work currently is inspired by coastal forms that include shells, sea-glass, seaweed, cliff faces and erosion and rock patterns. I spend much of my time walking along the Jurassic coastline in Dorset collecting, drawing and photographing natural forms that influence my making process. The vessels are hand-built from Volcan course stoneware clay. I surround myself with the coastal forms, photographs and drawings while I work in a spontaneous manner; the vessels emerge organically. After the first firing, I decorate them with special effect glazes which reflect the textures and colours of the coastline.
